I remember when I thought I was busy in college. It was difficult to do upper-class homework assignments, make it to class on time, coordinate a time to meet for group projects, go to an internship, work part-time, and study! Flash forward to the real world- it is even busier. Between work, running errands, cleaning, cooking, and all other adult tasks- health is not always a priority. It is so important to remember that your body and health should always be a top priority, because, without your health you have nothing. Here are 8 tips for staying healthy when you are really busy.
Bring your meals with youBringing your meals to work or school saves time, money, and the temptation of grabbing fast food. My entire childhood my mother made me bring my lunch to school so it got me into the habit of not leaving the house without something to eat. Seriously- even when I run out to do errands I will be sure to throw a Too Busy To Eat protein bar in my bag! If you don’t have the life-long habit of packing your lunch, starting a new habit takes a bit to get used to, but soon it will become second nature. If you know you are going to have a busy day, where you won’t have time to eat properly, bring to-go snacks like chopped veggies, fruit, or protein bars.
Plan your meals ahead of time
Meal prepping is the greatest thing. Seriously. Bulk cooking and prepping your meals on the weekends makes a week of successful eating. All it requires is for you to dedicate one to two hours of your weekend for bulk cooking- you will thank yourself later! For planning your lunches, just make an extra serving at dinner so you will have leftovers for lunch.
Talk to someoneMake a point to talk to either a counselor, mentor or coach at least once a month. And, it doesn’t have to be someone that you pay an arm and a leg to visit for an hour. Talking to an unbiased third party is a great way to keep your mental health in check. It releases stress, provides guidance in your busy life, and you often leave with great advice.
Embrace the crock-pot
Slow cookers are a savior for anyone- whether you are just cooking for yourself or an entire family! Just throw the ingredients to your meal in a slow cooker in the morning and it will cook while you’re busy at work. Don’t feel like you can only cook soups and stews in your slow cooker- there are endless recipe options! Oh, and did you know they make crock-pots you can control with your smartphone?
Make fitness a priority
You are probably already used to using to-do lists and looking at your calendar schedule to keep everything straight, so why not schedule your fitness? It is easy to brush fitness aside when you get busy but like I mentioned earlier, getting used to a routine only takes a little time! Besides, working out makes your entire day run more smoothly because you feel better mentally and physically. If you really don’t have time to make it to the gym or go for a jog, do everything you can to exercise throughout the day. Opt for the stairs, take a walk at lunch, get a stand-up desk for work, bike to work, walk your dog, or do squats when you are brushing your teeth. Stop making excuses, you are only hurting yourself.
